ESP1034LP various artists: The East Village Other
The first edition since the original vinyl to include the lengthy closing track, "Interview with Hairy." A legendary all-star cast of performers – Steve Weber (Holy Modal Rounders), The Velvet Underground (their first released recording, unavailable anywhere else!), Marion Brown, Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky, Tuli Kupferberg (The Fugs), Ishmael Reed, etc. – on an anti-war collage of words and sounds.
ESP2001LP Cromagnon: Cave Rock
An underground classic of freak-out psychedelia, Cave Rock a.k.a. Orgasm was included on Spin's "The Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s." "Cromagnon is ominous and experimental tribal music for the bad acid trip." – J. Scott Brubig, The Acid Archives
ESP4075 Last Exit: Iron Path
All-star quartet Last Exit (Sonny Sharrock, guitar; Peter Brötzmann, saxophone; Bill Laswell, bass; Ronald Shannon Jackson, drums) garnered its reputation with a string of unrelentingly forceful concert recordings in which it pushed the energy style of free jazz to its limits. When the group went into the studio for the only time, though, a very different sort of album emerged. Iron Path was so far ahead of its time that only now, over a quarter of a century later, is there an audience prepared for this album's pioneering hybrid of abstract heavy metal, unsettling ambient music, and free improvisation.
ESP5002LP Arborea: Fortress of the Sun
Among the most artistically successful alchemists of Indie/Psychedelic Folk, Arborea consists of Shanti Curran (vocals, banjo, "banjimer" [a banjo-dulcimer hybrid], harmonium, ukulele, sawing fiddle, and hammered dulcimer) and Buck Curran (guitars, vocals, sawing fiddle, flute, and banjo). Weaving together strands of indie rock, Appalachian folk, psychedelia, and ambient music into what has been called avant-folk, Arborea's songs combine delicate beauty and mystical lyrics with the timelessness of ancient songs.
ESP5014LP Buck Curran: Immortal Light
Immortal Light is the debut solo album by guitarist-singer-songwriter Buck Curran. Buck's music is influenced by landscapes of nature and has developed through a decade of playing with alt-folk duo Arborea, and the experience of playing Blues and Folk throughout the 1990s. He also draws inspiration from the deep well of Folk and Rock of the 1960s, American Blues and Folk music of the 1930s, British Folk and Psychedelic Folk/Rock of the ’60s and early ’70s, Indian Classical music, and Jazz of the ’50s and ’60s.
ESP5016LP Talibam!: Endgame of the Anthropocene
Talibam!’s emergence into hyperkinetic rhythm-based instrumental/electronic music. Kevin Shea is a master of cyber swing and ecowar rhythm — on this record, he keeps it android yet anthropoid, like Aphex Twin meeting a hologram Phil Collins. Keyboardist Matt Mottel anchors wide sweeps of analog synthesis — his sonic palette oscillating between the Silver Apples, Sun Ra, and Arca via an Arduino beta bass drop. This music is hallucinatory composition.
NOTE: Apologies for not including the Charles Manson LP. There is just one copy left here.
