Sonny Simmons’ two ESP releases Staying on the Watch and Music Of The Spheres are important examples of his idiosyncratic genius. With Sonny on alto, and the magnificent presence of the late Barbara Donald on trumpet, these two sessions will live long in the historical development of the Free Movement. Barbara Donald was a superb musician who made important contributions to the legacy of women performers. Pianist John Hicks makes his New York debut on Staying on the Watch, and has since become one of the most requested jazz pianists. After building his chops with numerous west coast bebop groups, Sonny moved to New York in the early 60’s, and played with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones, and Charles Mingus. These two 1966 sessions mark Sonny’s first and second as leader, and splendidly juxtapose smooth, crisp modal expressions with all-out free blowing, and post-bop swing with reactive rhythmic exploration. Fellow ESP leader and percussionist James Zitro is a welcome addition to second disc.
