Drawing from the traditions of Sun Ra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago as well as Miles Davis in his '60s and '70s electric period, multi-instrumentalists Steve Rush, Tom Abbs and Geoff Mann expand the trio format to new heights. From frenzied free-for-alls to delicate compositions, Yuganaut take the music out into outer space and back.
Stephen Rush, Tom Abbs, and Geoff Mann create genuinely unpredictable soundscapes throughout this highly diverse disc, but always with attention to organic development and flow... Yuganaut proves that their chosen style of musical expression can be the sound of something genuinely startling.

| Live at Cafe Montmartre, 1966 Volume Two |
| |
|
| "Don Cherry, more than any other artist in the jazz of his era, pioneered the music's internationalist nature that has now come to be commonly accepted as an integral part of its character. The individuality of Cherry's contribution to the history of jazz has often been unfairly obscured by his admittedly important association with the music of Ornette Coleman. While the (pocket) trumpeter's position as Coleman's front line partner in the altoist's first revolutionary quartet was indeed a major one, Cherry's role as one of the founders of the genre that is known today as "world music" is equally significant."-Russ Musto |

| Inside Out in the Open |
|
Inside Out In The Open is an hour-long documentary about a form of jazz, popularly known as free jazz. The film is an exploration of that music through the voices and performances of over twenty such musicians, from those who were its first generation to younger musicians joining the tradition.
Unlike more encyclopedic documentaries, Inside Out In The Open unfolds in a more organic and musical form, revealing multiple aspects of this music and its makers. The editing structure is reflective and complimentary to the music.
Free-form jazz, also known as the "the new thing," or "avant-garde jazz," burst on the scene in the early '60s, led by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. It vastly extended the boundaries in rhythm, sound, and harmonics, stressing collective improvisation, with an expansive openness and with deep personal emotion.
The release of Inside Out In The Open comes on the heels of the major 10-part "Jazz" series by Ken Burns, which was criticized for given little attention to jazz after 1960, and for being critical of the genre of "free jazz."
With only a small amount of media work available on this development in jazz, Inside Out In The Open is a welcome contribution, giving overdue respect to these musical artists. |

|
| Press Quotes: Lindha Kallerdahl has a remarkable span in her singing and it really shows on this tremendous solo album. Several songs are only vocals; sometimes she plays expressive piano and organ. A couple of jazz standards for example Body & Soul gets a new costume, mostly new songs by Lindha. She can sing soothing, the voice like pouring water, scatter and shout and, well anything in between. Jazz? Improvisation? Well Lindhamusic very impressive. All the way. PM JÖNSSON -Göteborgsposten."
"Singer Lindha Kalleredahl´s music could be placed within the interesting zone between jazz and progressive and improvisation music. She has said that she sees herse11lf as part of a tradition. But as listener you feel that her verbal whirlwind only touch the known references. There is singing but also vocal artistry that touches, and in its own way, link the mist far fetched influences and moments of recognition. "Gold" is actually her first solo album, but the experience she has gained from the collaborations with Anna Lindahl and Sonic Youth amongst others, doesn't pass the ear unnoticed. She is strong, intense and generous. She really wants; it seems, to move the listener. No posing and restrained bullshit. In other words. Lindha Kallerdahl is for real." JOHANNES CORNELL -DN. |

| Billie Holiday |
| Rare Live Recordings |
| |
| |
|
In 1972, thirteen years after her death, Congress extended copyright protections to include recorded musical performances. Holiday would have benefited greatly from such protection: During the more than twenty-five years of her career Holiday gave an unknown number of live performances on TV and radio and in clubs and concert halls, many of which were recorded both officially and unofficially by sound engineers, fellow musicians, and fans. Today ESP-Disk Records, which for many years has been assembling unofficial recordings of several artists from before 1972, has released one of the most comprehensive collections of live Billie Holiday recordings to date, some previously available but most not. These Holiday recordings, laid out in chronological order, not only demonstrate the arc of Holiday’s development as a vocalist but give a rare behind-the-scenes look into how the singer approached her musicians and her audience. |

| Bud Powell |
| Live at the Blue Note Cafe, Paris 1961 |
|
Reissued and Expanded!
"After bop pianist Bud Powell died in 1966, ESP-Disk Records kept his name alive with a series of archival live recordings curated from the personal collection of his wife, Buttercup Powell. Unlike their higher-profile Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker series, which were of unfortunately varying (and quite often very low) quality, the Bud Powell sessions are uniformly fine, with the excellent Live at the Blue Note Cafe, Paris 1961 a particular standout. Working in a trio format with local bassist Pierre Michelot and former Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Kenny Clarke, Powell stretches out on a set that's half evergreen standards (a rollicking "There Will Never Be Another You" opens the set) and half songs written or co-written by his friend and mentor Thelonious Monk. Although Powell's performances during this period were occasionally erratic owing to his sometimes precarious mental state, the pianist sounds relaxed and even playful on these eight tracks, investing his solos on Monk showcases like "'Round Midnight" with a lightness of touch that matches Clarke's fleet, flashy drumming. It's not one of Powell's most essential recordings, but Live at the Blue Note Cafe, Paris 1961 shows the pianist in a comfortable setting in front of an appreciative crowd."-Stewart Mason, All Music

| Albert Ayler |
| The Hilversum Session |
|
A legendary recording by tenor saxophonist Ayler with his amazing working band, recorded in Holland for radio play, here digitally remastered with new artwork, liner notes by Russ Musto.
The Hilversum session by Albert Ayler is one of those legendary recordings in free jazz. It was recorded in a Netherlands radio studio in front of a small invited audience, at the end of the Ayler Quartet's European tour on November 9, 1964 in front of a small invited audience. The band-Ayler, Don Cherry, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray-had been playing Ayler's tunes for months and were uncanny in their ability to hear one another and improvise together at that point. It was also the last time the group would record together under Ayler's name as a quartet and then went out at a peak.
Unknown radio studio recodings from Hilversum, Holland, November 9, 1964, originally released on LP as Osmosis (H) 6001. |

| "A continuation from the earlier Alan Ribback work, produced by Michael D. Anderson. The CD examines untapped and historically important achievements and tragedies in the lives of a people during the Civil Rights era. This compilation presents facts on events in black history that merit their being acknowledged. Other forth coming volumes will present further historical developments that will remain an important part of American history seen and unseen. Each CD will examine different aspects of the Civil Rights Movement featuring interview footage, press releases, and music heard during the time of each theme. The production of this CD is to encourage people of all races the do more study involving the Civil Rights era and other thematic topics that also address stages of development during this era. It is hoped that people of all races will better understand the on-going struggle of African Americans and the many achievements towards the development of this country which dispel the negative connotations passed down through families for generations."-ESP |

"Drawing from their extensive experience of playing with virtually every household name in the experimental and avant-garde jazz areas, this quartet featuring Hans Tammen, Alfred 23 Harth, Chris Dahlgren and Jay Rosen delivers a real thrill ride with their new release Expedition. Its members have played with John Zorn, Sonny Sharrock, Jaco Pastorius, Peter Brötzmann, David Murray, Fred Frith, Peter Kowald, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Keith Rowe, Günter Müller, Paul Lytton, William Parker, Herb Robertson and many others.
With masterful command of even the most extreme ranges of their instruments, the four musicians demonstrate perceptive and unflagging attention, bountiful energy, responsive imagination, and the ability to track rapidly shifting shapes of amassed sound and tack personal intent to the group's direction."-ESP |

Philadelphia free jazz scene band led by Elliot Levin. "In 2006, the revived ESP label issued this 1998 live set from the quartet New Ghost. The eccentric music is at its most vital when it involves free ensemble-oriented playing as on "It's That Passing Gleam" and "C.T." Some less successful spoken word poetry sections recall Albert Ayler's erratic Impulse albums, but in general the fiery and very open music holds one's interest. Percussionists (one at a time except for two appearing on "C.T.") make guest appearances on three numbers, adding to the fire of this stirring set. Saxophonist Elliott Levin in particular deserves to be much better known."-Scott Yanow, All Music

| Yma Sumac |
| Recital |
| |
| |
|
The voice of Yma Sumac is indeed a miracle of nature. However, if that were all she was, the public's interest would not have gone beyond mere curiosity. What has made the singer's abilities so striking is the fact that she has managed to use the immense vocal resources at her disposal, resolutely striving for genuine artistry.
Her early repertoire included popular music and jazz pieces which she performed in her own inimitable and scintillating style. However, by 1961, when this recording was made, she had abandoned this path, devoting herself to the noble and challenging goal of making known the music of her homeland. The folklore of Peru, influenced by the Spanish musical tradition, has become widely known and appreciated, due in large part to the artistry of Miss Sumac. In addition to Peruvian music, folk songs from neighboring countries - Bolivia, Chile, etc - became a major part of Yma Sumac's repertoire.
Recorded live in 1961, Bucharest, Romania. |

| Frank Wright |
| Unity |
|
"Wright's sound developed through the years, but always maintained the spirit and fire that first came through his horn in the early days. Whether he was performing with Lester Bowie's Sho' Nuff Orchestra, Rashied Ali's Funky Free Boppers, Cecil Taylor's Orchestra of Two Continents or Saheb Sarbib's Multinational Big Band, he always played with an uncompromising passion that was the signature of his sound. 'I was put on this planet by the Creator to proclaim the message of the Universal Spirit - to shout it to the people,' Wright said before he died prematurely in 1990, two months shy of his 55th birthday. On June 1, 1974 he did just that, and the resounding ovation the audience gives at the end of the concert, is proof positive that the people had indeed heard him. Now others may also share the moving experience of that day."-Russ Musto, 2006

| Albert Ayler brought her to ESP. Praised by Yoko Ono and Diamanda Galás for her influence on their work, this shy and riveting performer/singer /songwriter made the two albums contained here before retiring to raise her son. She has recently returned to performing. Essential listening for all aspiring singers. |

Reissued and Expanded!
Sonny Simmons’ two ESP releases Staying on the Watch and Music Of The Spheres are important examples of his idiosyncratic genius. With Sonny on alto, and the magnificent presence of the late Barbara Donald on trumpet, these two sessions will live long in the historical development of the Free Movement. Barbara Donald was a superb musician who made important contributions to the legacy of women performers. Pianist John Hicks makes his New York debut on Staying on the Watch, and has since become one of the most requested jazz pianists. After building his chops with numerous west coast bebop groups, Sonny moved to New York in the early 60’s, and played with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy, Elvin Jones, and Charles Mingus. These two 1966 sessions mark Sonny’s first and second as leader, and splendidly juxtapose smooth, crisp modal expressions with all-out free blowing, and post-bop swing with reactive rhythmic exploration. Fellow ESP leader and percussionist James Zitro is a welcome addition to second disc. |

| Marion Brown |

Two versions of Marion Brown Quartet were released on vinyl in the 1960’s. The first contained the Alan Shorter tune “Exhibition”. After a small, initial pressing, the song was removed. All subsequent versions of the album featured the replacement song “Mephistopheles”. However, the liner material was never changed, and “Mephistopheles” remained titled “Exhibition”. For the first time, this new release includes all four tracks from that 1965 session, Marion’s first as a leader. Capricorn Moon’s playful rhythmic interchange, and the light, happy melody, provide an appropriate preface to Marion’s relaxed yet purposeful solo. Through a gradual devolution by repetition of the rhythmic and melodic foundation, the song loosens and intensifies, but never loses its cool. It also hints at what’s to come: From the blazing, angular 27 Cooper Square to subtly dissonant Mephistopheles, the album is a revelatory celebration and both a cerebral and an emotional journey.
After coming to New York, Marion began his recorded career on John Coltrane’s legendary Ascension. Additionally, Marion has played and recorded with such greats as: Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Bill Dixon, and Kenny Burrell. |

Reissued and Expanded!
In the spring of 1967, Wright made his second date as a leader for ESP, the powerful quintet statement of Your Prayer (ESP 1053) featuring Wright in the company of Cleveland-born altoist Arthur Jones, expatriate Martinique-born, French-educated trumpeter Jacques Coursil, drummer Muhammad Ali and bassist Steve Tintweiss. Where the first date falters at a lack of dynamics and cohesion (not to mention experience), Your Prayer finds Wright refining the bag his solos come from, yet maintaining a firm hold on the ecstatic free-blues shout that makes up most of his solo language. The set starts off with Jones' composition "The Lady," a simple unison ascending-descending call for the horns peaking in vibrato, which gives way to a searing solo by the composer with echoes of Dolphy's speed and intervallic leaps coupled to Johnny Hodges' tone, a quality that clearly defined this altoist's style for the few years he was actively recording. Coursil follows with a deft series of punches and blasts, exuding the bubbly-yet-raw swing his solos always carry, even in the most 'out' contexts."-Clifford Allen, All About Jazz |

Classic Reissue!
"This combined release features two live sets of early Albert Ayler material. 1964's Prophecy, Ayler's earliest recording date for ESP, features the trio that later recorded Spiritual Unity. On this date, the group is in spectacular form. 1965's Bells, finds Ayler in quintet form, backed by his brother Donald, Charles Tyler, Lewis Worrell, and the familiar Sunny Murray. Short and sweet, Bells is a 20-minute powerful, ferocious romp containing excellent group improvisation and Ayler's signature military-themed melodies."-ESP |
